Bulgaria is to ban timber exports to non-EU countries
Bulgaria will ban the export of wood to non-EU countries until November 17 this year to address the shortage of wood for the general public and the wood-processing industry, according to a ministerial decree issued by caretaker Agriculture Minister Yavor Gechev on August 18.
In an interview with Bulgarian broadcaster bTV on August 17, the minister said that the demand for timber in Bulgaria had increased threefold due to high fuel prices.
A year ago, the price of wood in Sofia was 90 to 100 levs per cubic meter (about $50 per cubic meter), but now it is 180 levs per cubic meter (about $94 per cubic meter).
The minister held talks with two large Bulgarian timber processing plants on August 16.
