Brazilian timber exports fell again
According to recently released Brazilian timber export data, in May 2023, the export value of Brazilian wood products (excluding pulp and paper) fell by 35% year-on-year to only $329.2 million. Previously, in 2022, this figure reached $503.3 million.
Among the numerous exports of timber and wood products:
Exports of sawn pine timber increased by 4% to 306,300 cubic meters; Value decreased 12% to $74.5 million;
Tropical sawn timber exports fell 34% to 29,000 cubic meters; The value of exports decreased by 21% to US$14.9 million;

Tropical plywood exports fell 46% to 3,200 cubic meters and the export value fell 44% to $1.9 million.
Among them, wooden furniture is one of Brazil's key export trade this year, but so far, its export performance seems to have failed to meet Brazil's expectations.
The data shows that the value of Brazilian wooden furniture exports fell from $58.8 million in May 2022 to $52.1 million in the same period in 2023, which means that Brazil's total wooden furniture exports fell by 11% in May 2023.
Previously, Brazil said that it would vigorously develop the domestic wood processing industry and increase furniture exports. However, according to the export of Brazilian wooden furniture in the first five months of this year, increasing the export of furniture is still facing certain difficulties.
In this regard, industry insiders said that in addition to internal factors related to the domestic economy, politics, industry business environment and international trade. Externally, external factors such as exchange rate fluctuations, tariff barriers, international competition, logistics, international demand and economic conditions in major import markets also affect Brazil's exports of wood and wooden furniture.
