Canada's timber production increased by 9.9% in April, with capacity utilization exceeding 80% for the first time

    According to the latest data from Statistics Canada, in April 2024, Canadian sawmills produced 4.557 million cubic meters of timber, an increase of 3.6% from March. However, during the same period, the sales volume of timber decreased by 2.7% month on month to 4.21 million cubic meters.

    Compared to the same period in 2023, Canada's timber production has increased significantly by 9.9%, and shipments have also increased by 5.6%. From January to April, Canada's cumulative timber production was approximately 17.303 million cubic meters, a year-on-year increase of 3.2%.

    The annual timber production in Canada from April 2023 to present is 51.908 million cubic meters, an increase of 5.8% compared to the same period in 2023, but a decrease of 3.0% compared to the five-year average production of 53.514 million cubic meters.

    In April, the capacity utilization rate of Canada's wood manufacturing industry was 80.5%, a year-on-year increase of 4.1 percentage points and a month on month increase of 3.4 percentage points.

In May 2024, the average price of soft wood exported from Canada to the United States decreased by 5% compared to April. However, this has increased by 3% compared to a year ago. In May, Canada's exports of soft wood to the United States decreased by 4% year-on-year.
