Finland's industrial log harvest fell 13 per cent in June
In June 2023, the amount of industrial log harvesting in Finland fell, down a significant 13% from the previous year. According to data provided by the Finnish Natural Resources Institute (Luke), a total of 3.9 million cubic meters of logs were harvested for industrial use during this period.
The decline was further highlighted compared with the five-year average, which fell 12 percent in June. In the first half of the year, a total of 30.3 million cubic meters of timber was harvested from January to June. However, this was a small decline of 1 percent compared to the previous year and an even steeper decline of 4 percent compared to the five-year average.
In the industrial log removal category, sawn wood accounted for 1.7 million cubic meters and pulp wood for 2.1 million cubic meters. Industrial log harvesting in non-industrial private forests was down a whopping 13 percent from the previous year.
Forestry companies and state-owned trees cut down 900,000 cubic meters, 15 percent less than the previous year. In addition, the amount of energy wood felling was 700,000 cubic meters, of which cutting branches and whole trees accounted for 47%.
